Dawn “Shelly” Hollis received the PAEMST while teaching chemistry and physics at Central High School in Lauderdale County. She holds a B.S. in biology, an M.A.Ed. in chemistry, and is certified in general science. She is also National Board Certified in Adolescence and Young Adulthood (AYA) Physics and is a certified school administrator. She taught high school science for 10 years before becoming the director of the Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative (AMSTI) at the University of North Alabama. AMSTI provides hands-on materials, onsite support, and professional development for teachers. Shelly held this position for 10 years and then moved into a Senior Consultant/Coach role with Franklin Covey's Leader in Me program for three and a half years. Shelly just retired from Sheffield City Schools where she served as the Curriculum & Instructional Specialist/Technology Integration Specialist. Winning the PAEMST award opened many doors for Shelly, including obtaining the director position with AMSTI. Being able to provide a STEM program for hundreds of teachers in her region was a true joy. She would later win the Marbury award for Technology Integration from the State Department of Education. She has served on a national selection panel for PAEMST and presented at numerous conferences over the years.
