Receiving the Presidential Award is a great honor, not only to myself, but to my family and all of the teachers, mentors, and students that have been a part of my life. This award is validation I have used all of their love and support to perform to the absolute best of my ability. With a desire for knowledge, anything is possible. Teaching is more than imparting knowledge, it is taking the time to show others how they can outperform their own expectations in ways originally thought unimaginable.

Jonathan Fugleberg taught mathematics at May-Port CG High School for the past nine years. His classes ranged from Math 8 to Advance Placement Calculus AB, as well as Physics for 11th and 12th graders. He was also a guest lecturer in mathematics at Mayville State University. He retired in May 2016. As an advocate for teaching and learning in his school, he was active in MATHCOUNTS at the local and state level; obtained a grant to increase the technology available in the high school’s mathematics classrooms; and increased the school’s mathematics offerings to include upper level courses, including Dual Credit College Algebra and the first Advanced Placement mathematics course. Jon presented at numerous local and statewide conferences, at all grade levels, on a wide variety of mathematics and science topics. His awards include the Dennis Kost Award for Outstanding Achievement in Secondary Education and the Minot State University Citation of Excellence. Jon served two years as President of the North Dakota Council of Teachers of Mathematics and was on its Board of Directors for nine years. Jon earned a B.S. in marine engineering from the United States Merchant Marine Academy, a B.S. in mathematics education, summa cum laude, from Mayville State University, and a M.A.T. in mathematics from Minot State University. He was certified in middle school and high school mathematics and high school science.
