I became a teacher because of my passion for teaching and learning. This award verifies my success at my chosen profession. It is an incredible honor to be chosen to receive the Presidential Award. I never expected to be rewarded for what I love to do, helping students to learn, grow and achieve success.
Patricia Urasky has been an educator for more than 30 years and spent the last 10 years teaching mathematics at East High School. She most recently taught Geometry, Algebra Concepts II, Honors Algebra II, and College Algebra and Trigonometry. For the past nine years, she has co-taught courses with special education teachers to meet the needs of students on Individual Education Plans, and has worked with at-risk students to help them achieve their high school diplomas. She currently teaches geometry at Waimea High School in Kauai, HI. Students in Patricia’s class learn that they can achieve success while having fun. Placing emphasis on real-world applications of mathematical topics makes education meaningful. In addition to being Mathematics Department Chair, Patricia has been on the district’s Secondary Math Council, a coach for the school’s Wyoming Academic Challenge Team, a member of the district’s Common Core Curriculum and Assessment Geometry Committee, and an extended day tutor. Patricia earned a B.S. in mathematics education, with a minor in psychology, from Northern Illinois University. She has continued her education at the University of Wyoming, Utah State University, and the University of Northern Colorado. She is currently certified in 6–12 mathematics, middle school, and 6–12 psychology. Patricia recently received a Hawai’i Standard License to teach mathematics 6–12.
