It is an unbelievable honor to be chosen as a recipient of the Presidential Award. I am very grateful for this award and share it with the many wonderful mentors and colleagues who over time have shaped my teaching. My students are my inspiration. Creating an environment that cultivates a love of learning is my ultimate goal.
Karen (Katie) Bungo has been an educator for 22 years. She is currently a fifth grade teacher at Eisenhower Elementary School. She served for two years as the districtwide mathematics coach within the Indiana Area School District. Previously, Katie taught fifth grade science and mathematics at Horace Mann Elementary School and also taught health and physical education. She has also taught college-level mathematics courses for Westmoreland County Community College and Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Dedicated to helping children conceptually understand mathematics, Katie believes students learn best when they can share their problem-solving strategies in a rich discourse environment. Through providing both project-based learning and hands-on opportunities, her students see how mathematical concepts connect in real-world settings. Katie has presented at symposiums nationwide, coauthored research publications, and served on various statewide committees. She has been awarded multiple grants and received Teacher of the Year in 2007 for Indiana County. She has coordinated the After School Math Tutoring Program for her district and has served as a mentor teacher. Katie has a B.S. in health and physical education from Lock Haven University and a M.Ed. in elementary and middle school mathematics from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She is a certified elementary school teacher.
