Being a recipient of the Presidential Award is both humbling and exhilarating. This award is validation of years of hard work creating a risk-free, engaging classroom climate where students are allowed to explore, experiment, and synthesize new mathematical ideas and skills. I plan to continue to let my love and enthusiasm for mathematics shine as I help develop an excitement and appreciation for mathematics in my students.

Tammy (Renee) Joiner has been teaching fifth grade mathematics at Little Mountain Elementary School for the past 14 years. Renee strives to establish a risk-free learning environment where excitement and enthusiasm flourish. Hands-on tasks and real-world problem solving situations allow her students to explore ideas and learn through their own discoveries while collaborating with their classmates. Renee has served as a mathematics lab classroom for her school district. She has also developed and facilitated numerous mathematical professional development sessions for district teachers. She has worked with many undergraduate and graduate education students as a cooperating teacher and mentor. Renee attended the Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy. She has been a member of her school leadership team, the school mathematics team, the district curriculum guide and assessment team, the South Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. She is currently attending sessions to become a certified pre-kindergarten through fifth grade numeracy leader. Renee has a B.S., magna cum laude, in business administration and elementary education from Newberry College. She is certified in second through sixth grade elementary education. Renee received a M.Ed. from Southern Wesleyan University.
