Teaching is a never-ending learning process, and in applying for this award, I have learned a great deal about my teaching philosophy and practices. I have been able to better evaluate and assess my own teaching styles and methods, which in turn has enabled me to become a more effective teacher for my students. I also feel this has allowed me to become a better supporter and mentor for other educators.

Alysia Augustus has been an educator for 7 years, having spent the last 2 years as the first and second grade mathematics intensive teacher at Anderson Grove Elementary in the Papillion-La Vista School District.   Alysia completed Primarily Math, a component of NebraskaMATH, which is a National Science Foundation Math and Science Partnership program at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. This program allows her to take on a variety of leadership roles. For example, she was given 16 days to work as a building mathematics coach, which allowed her to plan lessons with and debrief teachers as well as share instructional strategies. Alysia had the opportunity to work with the University of Nebraska at Lincoln’s Dr. Ruth Heaton on a studio classroom. She opened her classroom to other teachers and administrators to observe planning, teaching, and reflecting during five different lessons. Alysia loves teaching and helping students learn from their mistakes. She has created a safe classroom where students feel comfortable sharing strategies and having indepth discussions. Alysia has a B.A. in education from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and an M.Ed. from Doane College. She holds a K-3 Mathematics Specialist Certificate from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.
