From start to finish, the entire PAEMST process has been such an unbelievable learning experience that gave me an opportunity to think deeply about my teaching and to analyze what I believe about learning. As I reflected on my own practices and talked to other educators about what makes them effective, I not only grew as an educator but also as a person. It has made me feel proud and fortunate to be part of a caring network of dedicated teachers.
Barbara Kelley has taught third grade at Cannon Elementary School in the Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District since 1985, having begun her career in Amarillo, TX, in 1979. A member of the District Math Vertical and Instructional Leadership teams, Mrs. Kelley serves as Professional Learning Group facilitator, new hire mentor, and trainer of future teachers. In 2006 she became a trainer in Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI), serving as District Initiative Trainer for all elementary campuses.

A colleague and parent of a former student praised Mrs. Kelley for helping students discover mathematics and science as well as themselves by building trust and celebrating individual talents. Another colleague who has worked with Mrs. Kelley in mathematics teaching and teacher training echoed this theme and pointed to the value she adds in bolstering teachers' understanding of how children learn mathematics. Her principal noted the nurturing environment she provides to foster independent thinking. Mrs. Kelley is known for teaming; she and the third grade team at Cannon Elementary School are recognized as models both on the campus and districtwide.

In addition to her passion for mathematics and student achievement, Mrs. Kelley is recognized as a self-starter constantly searching for new knowledge and skills. She has taken advantage of numerous professional growth opportunities. In addition to her CGI training, her recent activities include Teachers Immersed in Math Study and the Conference for Advancement of Mathematics Teachers. Mrs. Kelley's initiative has also led to considerable book study in mathematics learning and teaching.

Mrs. Kelley has received several honors, including Cannon Elementary Teacher of the Year and yearbook dedication awards, Friend to Children and Texas PTA Honorary Life Membership recognition from the PTA Board, and a School Board Award of Excellence in Education.

Mrs. Kelley has a B.S. in elementary education with a minor in physical education from Hardin-Simmons University. She is certified in elementary education.
