It was an honor to be nominated by my administration, and an even greater honor to be recognized by the PAEMST award committee and included among such an accomplished group of math and science educators. I am grateful to be receiving such a prestigious honor for doing the work I truly love.
Mrs. Brown's background in special education, deep understanding of content and pedagogy, and passion for improving student achievement make her a truly gifted educator. She is extremely capable and knowledgeable in the area of adaptive learning, particularly in using technology to increase students' understanding and application of basic mathematics concepts. Parents describe her as a conscientious, patient, and dedicated teacher who is able to turn the tremendous challenges faced by her students into rewarding and effective learning experiences.
Teachers and students alike benefit from Mrs. Brown's expertise. She has worked with Baltimore County Public Schools' Office of Mathematics as a curriculum writer, special education consultant, professional development presenter, and instructor. She has also served on a systemwide committee, organized by the Elementary Mathematics and Special Education Offices, that developed a differentiation document for mathematics instruction. She consistently promotes high standards for all students through her presentations at New Teachers Academies on differentiated instruction and accommodating special education students in general mathematics and science classes.
Mrs. Brown's teaching excellence has received frequent recognition. In 2008 the Baltimore County Chamber of Commerce presented Mrs. Brown with the Award for Excellence in Education in the area of Special Education. She was named Maryland Council of Teachers of Mathematics Elementary Math Teacher of the Year in 2007, Regional Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year in 2005, Baltimore County Public Schools Teacher of the Year nominee in 2004, and Essex-Middle River-White Marsh Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Teacher in 2003.
Mrs. Brown has a B.A. in education from Muskingum College, with certification in both elementary and special education. She recently completed the Leadership in Technology Integration Certificate Program at Johns Hopkins University. She holds an Advanced Professional MD Certificate in kindergarten through sixth grade elementary and middle school education, and first through eighth grade generic special education. She is qualified in both Elementary Special Education and Elementary/Middle General Education. She is currently working to complete the National Board Certification process.
