It is my belief that mathematics can be taught to all students, given the correct strategies and emphasis on relevance in instruction. Receiving the Presidential Award is a confirmation of my attempts to use best practices in mathematics instruction. This honor encourages me to continue using strategies that help all students learn mathematics. I am grateful to my students, and colleagues at the school where I teach, and hopeful that I can be an inspiration to other math teachers.
Weslyn Harry teaches mathematics at Ivanna Eudora Kean High School in the Virgin Islands. She has taught 9th grade Honors Algebra, 10th grade Geometry, and 11th grade Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry for 10 years. In June 2005, she assisted in the alignment of the Virgin Islands’ mathematics curriculum for Advanced Placement courses.
As the 2007 Teacher of the Year for her school, Weslyn is confident in her ability to explain complicated mathematical concepts using strategies such as concept maps, anticipation guides, class discussion, music, manipulatives, and technology.
As a certified Promethean trainer, Weslyn conducts workshops at her school. In a typical lesson, graphing calculators, web video clips, and Geometer's Sketchpad software help students solve problems, conduct analysis, and make predictions using data from real-world situations.
Weslyn is a member of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and International Society for Technology in Education.
Weslyn has a B.A in Mathematics and an M.Ed. with a concentration in Supervision and Administration from the University of the Virgin Islands.
