The Presidential Award is recognition of my passion for teaching elementary mathematics. There is no more gratifying feeling than to be commended for what I do. This prestigious award makes me think of all of the faces that have crossed my educational path. From the worried, small fifth grader to the most dedicated coworker, I am humbled to be singled out. No award is ever won by one person alone, but with the constant collaboration and selflessness of others. For that I am grateful and honored.

Victoria Hugate has been a fifth grade teacher for 10 years at Grange Hall Elementary School.

As Grange Hall's mathematics lead teacher, Vickie supervises all mathematics activities for kindergarten through fifth grade. She conducts workshops and professional development opportunities for all county teachers during the summer and throughout the school year. Her activities with this professional learning community are in addition to teaching all core subjects to her students.

Vickie communicates her love for mathematics by engaging students, parents, and teachers in Math Nights at her school. Finding innovative ways to teach mathematics to her students, she creates events that challenge attendees to stretch their minds with games and activities related to mathematics. She is successful at getting students to think about mathematics in new ways by developing real-life problem solving that is relevant. Vickie has reached out to the community and has created a business partnership between Food Lion supermarkets and the school's Math Nights.

Her awards include Teacher of the Year and the prestigious Teacher of Excellence Award and an $8,000 grant.

Vickie has a B.S. in psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University. She is certified in kindergarten through sixth grade education.
