The Presidential Award means being selected as a member of an elite group of educators who share a commitment to high-level math and science teaching. This award is a reflection on all of the tremendous colleagues I’ve worked with who have shared their expertise and common passion for teaching with me. Most importantly, the Presidential Award honors all of the students who have looked at me expectantly on their first day of class and have inspired me to strive for excellence for their benefit.
Sue Carlson has taught mathematics in Wyoming for 21 years. She currently teaches at Kelly Walsh High School, where she has been for the past 7 years. Prior to that, she spent 14 years at Dean Morgan Junior High.
During her tenure at Kelly Walsh High School, Sue has taught mathematics to students in grades 9-12. This year she is teaching Honors Geometry and levels 1, 2, and 3 of Systemic Initiative for Montana Mathematics and Science (SIMMS) Integrated Math. Her classroom has an atmosphere of high expectations, strong organization, caring, and mutual respect. Sue strives to help students become critical thinkers who understand not only how, but also why, concepts work. She does this by integrating hands-on activities, explorations, technology laboratories, and high-level questions that have been thoughtfully preplanned to meet a specific content need.
Sue led a professional development class, Exploring Math Concepts through Geometer’s Sketchpad, for district colleagues. She has been trained in peer coaching and has used those skills to help support mathematics instruction in other teachers’ classrooms. Sue frequently shares her lessons with members of her department.
Sue has a B.S.Ed. in Mathematics Education from the University of South Dakota and an M.Ed in Technology in Education from Lesley University. She is certified in mathematics education.
