The Presidential Award is an amazing honor for something I love to do--teach. It means that leaders and other professionals recognize my classroom instruction as being exemplary and recognizes the value of my contributions to mathematics education in my building, district, and beyond. It validates the approach I have for working with students and motivates me to continue to reflect on my own practice and improve my profession. I am privileged to represent Missouri as a recipient of this award.
Steve Willott currently teaches Advanced Placement Statistics and Calculus at Francis Howell North High School, where he has taught mathematics for 16 years.
Steve has been recognized for his work with students and colleagues, exploration and advocacy of new technology, and enthusiastic support of professional development. He supports his school’s Professional Learning Communities in both research and leadership roles. He has coordinated the revision and writing of curriculums and activities related to the mathematics of amusement parks.
Steve has mentored several teachers throughout Missouri on their successful achievement of National Board Certification, and he helped write a model mathematics curriculum for Missouri. He has served on numerous committees in his district, presented at local and state conferences, and inspired several of his own students to become teachers.
Steve was named the 2007 Francis Howell School District Teacher of the Year. In recognition of his continual professional development, he received the 2008 Gary K. Wright Scholarship Award.
Steve has a B.A. in Mathematics and an M.A. in Education from Truman State University. He is a National Board Certified Teacher.
