Sharon Hoffert has spent all but two of her 14 years as a teacher of mathematics at James River High School in Midlothian, VA. With a certification in secondary mathematics, she teaches AP Calculus, foundations of algebra for English as a Second Language (ESL) students, and applied algebra for ESL students. She is a National Board Certified Teacher in adolescent and young adulthood mathematics.
Since 2000, Ms. Hoffert has attended the annual Advanced Placement Calculus Conference as well as several summer institutes. Most recently she attended the Virginia ESL Supervisors Annual Conference. She is a member of the Greater Richmond, VA, and National Councils of Teachers of Mathematics. She also is a member of the Virginia Teacher Leaders Network, National Carolina Association of Advanced Placement Teachers of Mathematics, and TODOS: Mathematics for All.
Ms. Hoffert has served as the chair of the James River High School mathematics department, member of the School Improvement Plan committee, and cosponsor of the National Honor Society. She has also been a cooperating teacher for several programs, including Teachers for Tomorrow.
Ms. Hoffert has been honored in Who’s Who of American Educators and has received the James River High School Teacher of the Year Award, the Outstanding Teacher Award from the Elks National Foundation, and an R.E.B. Award for Teaching Excellence. She was one of 200 mathematics and science teachers chosen worldwide to attend Space Camp in Huntsville, AL, as a Honeywell Educator.
Ms. Hoffert has a B.S. in mathematics from Longwood College and has completed graduate-level coursework at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and George Mason University.
