Scot Alan Hovan teaches physics at Mahtomedi High School in Mahtomedi, MN. He teaches both 11th- and 12th-grade physics and AP physics. He has taught for eleven years, teaching physics at Mahtomedi High School for three years. Mr. Hovan has prepared presentations demonstrating SMART Board technology to school faculty, the school district board, and the Mahtomedi Area Education Foundation to assist in the procurement of SMART Boards for the school.
School administrators describe Mr. Hovan as a caring individual, treating all students and parents with dignity. Parents believe that his instructional methods positively impact student achievement and that he is very dedicated to meeting the needs of each student. He is known for implementing cooperative group learning in his classroom, and he provides real-life problems for students to solve.
Mr. Hovan received an MBNA Foundation in Excellence in Education Grant. He was also a presenter at the national meeting of the American Association of Physics Teachers.
Mr. Hovan holds State licensure in physics for grades nine through twelve. He graduated from the University of Dayton with a B.S. in mechanical engineering. While in college, he interned with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. He has an M.A. in secondary science education, with a focus on physics, from the Teachers College at Columbia University. Mr. Hovan has also participated in the National Science Foundation-sponsored Summer Institute for Physics and Physical Science Teachers at the University of Washington.
