The Presidential Award is a tremendous honor. I believe that who you become as a teacher is a reflection of your environment and the experiences you have been afforded. Throughout my career I have been surrounded by excellent mentors in schools that nurture innovation and professional growth. I am very grateful to receive this award, not only for myself, but also in honor of those persons who have encouraged and inspired me as a mathematics teacher.
Matt Miller has taught mathematics at George Washington High School for 10 years. He also spent 2 years teaching at Iowa Mennonite School and 1 year at Aldine High School in Houston, TX.
Infusing technology into the mathematics classroom is Matt’s specialty. He is an avid user of Geometer’s Sketchpad and enjoys using it to create environments in which students can interact with and explore mathematics. He shares his work at workshops and on his website.
Matt created and continues to coach Washington’s Math Team. Once a week, a gathering of young mathematicians can be found in Matt's room tackling challenging problems and enjoying some recreational mathematics.
Matt has served as a leader in the Cedar Rapids Community School District as a technology trainer, professional learning community leader, mathematics advocate team member, and mentor for new teachers. A highlight of Matt’s career was spending two summers in Chicago working as a geometry author for the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project.
Matt has a B.A. in Mathematics and an M.A. in Mathematics Education from the University of Iowa. He is a National Board Certified Teacher and holds Iowa certification in K-12 mathematics.
