Matthew Winking teaches applied algebra and advanced algebra and trigonometry at Phoenix High School in Lawrenceville, GA. On Saturdays, he teaches freshman college algebra. He has certification in secondary mathematics education.
Mr. Winking is recognized for his commitment to making mathematics relevant and accessible to a nontraditional student population. (Phoenix is the alternative school of choice for students who have been largely unsuccessful in a traditional high school setting.) He teaches problem solving and reasoning along with mathematics.
Mr. Winking is an integral part of professional learning opportunities offered by the mathematics office for Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS). He shares his knowledge with colleagues. For the past 13 years, he has held computer workshops for secondary teachers to help them integrate technology into their classrooms. He develops and facilitates innovative professional workshops to show how technology can greatly enhance student learning. Mr. Winking’s work with teachers has resulted in an increasingly large number of mathematics classrooms benefitting from the use of available technology. He recently presented strategies using digital portfolios at the national conference of the Coalition of Essential Schools.
Mr. Winking’s continued professional growth and demonstrated expertise in classroom instruction led to his designation as GCPS High School Teacher of the Year. His other honors include Phoenix High School Teacher of the Year and the Star Teacher Award. He is chair of the mathematics department and the coordinator for Leadership Support Technology.
