Matthew Francis Anthes-Washburn teaches introductory physics to ninth graders at Boston International High School in the Boston Public Schools. Mr. Anthes-Washburn has been a teacher for seven years and in the Boston Public Schools for six years. He serves as a lead teacher for the science department and is the technology support teacher for the Academy. He is published in peer-reviewed journals and in other publications such as those developed by Biological Sciences Curriculum Study, a science curriculum and standards research organization.
Mr. Anthes-Washburn shows concern and professional affection for all his students, who are urban underrepresented minority students. He spends extra time with his students, such as helping them with robotics competitions and taking them on field trips to a local college, to ensure that they achieve success in high school and beyond. He also works closely with parents so they know how their child is doing and what support he or she needs. To provide more positive experiences for the students, he invites the community to attend student presentations.
Mr. Anthes-Washburn is known for creating a learning environment for students and teachers. Teachers use him as the go-to person for computers and technologies. In addition, he developed physics Web sites for the teachers. Mr. Anthes-Washburn serves as a teacher participant for the field test of the NSF-sponsored Active Physics curriculum.
Mr. Anthes-Washburn holds certification in physics and biology. He has a B.S. in natural resources and an M.A.T. from Cornell University, and he has completed graduate physics courses at Boston University.
