The prestige and honor of being nominated for the Presidential Award for Excellence is a highlight of my teaching career. It is very humbling to be set apart by my peers for this tribute. This recognition would not be possible if not for the dedicated nature of my students, their parents, and the colleagues and administrators that I work with. I have dedicated my life to teaching mathematics and molding young minds, and to be recognized for this is a compliment beyond compare.
Mallory Zimmerman has been teaching seventh and eighth grade mathematics in the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District since 1987. Her current assignment includes teaching Pre-Advanced Placement Algebra I to eighth grade students. She also serves as campus facilitator for the Gifted and Talented Education Program and as sponsor for the National Junior Honor Society.
Mallory's approach to teaching is innovative and appeals to teenagers' sense of adventure. She is famous for her Window of Opportunity, which students literally climb through when they arrive before and after the school day for tutoring. Students fondly remember this experience and often return in later years for additional assistance.
Mallory credits her training as an engineer with helping her to instill an appetite for the joy of learning in her students. She is unwavering in her desire for them to understand the dynamic nature of mathematics and its real-life applications.
Mallory has a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and an M.Ed. in Teaching Middle School Mathematics from Texas State University. Her certifications include Secondary Mathematics, Master Mathematics Teacher, and Gifted and Talented Education. She is also a trainer of trainers for Advancement Via Individual Determination and an Intel trainer.
