I believe the Presidential Award gives recognition to those teachers whose passion for their content area and their love for students is blended with the ability to effectively teach. Receiving the award would be the greatest honor of my teaching career, encouraging me as I seek to make a difference in the lives of my students. It would motivate me to continue my work of providing my students with a top-notch math education in a positive and enjoyable classroom setting.

Lorraine Darwin has taught at Cabot High School for the last 10 years. In the 5 years prior to this, she taught in the Pulaski County District and at Lawrence High School in Lawrence, KS. Lorraine has taught a wide variety of mathematics courses and has been teaching Precalculus, Trigonometry, and Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus since the 2006 school year.

Lorraine presents lessons with enthusiasm and incorporates creative projects and activities to help students learn and retain course content, including student-made mathematics videos and a project where students find the volume of complex models that they have constructed. Students especially enjoy learning and singing a song that Lorraine wrote to help them remember key concepts for their AP Calculus exam.

For the last few years, Lorraine’s professional development has focused on AP content and instructional strategies designed to increase student interaction and involvement.

Lorraine has a B.S.Ed. in Mathematics and an M.S.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Mathematics, both from the University of Kansas. Lorraine is certified to teach grades 5-12 mathematics.
