Lorna Thomas Vazquez

Granton, WI

A National Board Certified Teacher in Mathematics/Adolescence and Young Adulthood, Lorna Vazquez has been teaching at Granton High School in Granton, WI, for 12 years. She previously taught for five years at Sunburst Youth Homes in Neillsville.

With certification in grades seven through twelve mathematics, she teaches algebra I, advanced algebra, pre-calculus, geometry, and essentials of math. She also mentors AP calculus online and is an instructor for a graduate-level course for teachers of kindergarten through twelfth grade mathematics at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota.

Ms. Vazquez has recently been awarded a fellowship with the Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Program and will be serving in that position at the Department of Energy Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists during the 2008–2009 school year.

Ms. Vazquez’s passion for teaching is evident in all that she does. She has exceptional classroom skills and is also an exceptional teacher leader and presenter. Her credibility with colleagues and associates is built on her proven success with students. Her students consistently score at or near the top of some 30 school districts.

She provides a risk-free environment where students can experience success and recognize and believe in their own abilities. Parents feel fortunate that their children have such a skilled and enthusiastic teacher in the rural school district. Administrators and colleagues describe her as an outstanding person and educator who has truly made an impact at all levels of mathematics education.

A Crystal Apple Award recipient, Ms. Vazquez is committed to professional development. Her participation in and contributions to professional development for herself and other teachers are extraordinary. Calculators in Math Class, Families of Functions, and World Class Math are among the workshops she has presented.

Ms. Vazquez has a B.S. in mathematics and Master’s Program for Teaching Certification from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has a Master of Education from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
