As the nation's highest honor, receiving this award is so precious to me that I choose to accept it on behalf of my mom, my first teacher. My mother taught children in rural schools in South Dakota for 37 years. I learned, at a young age, from her, how to be an excellent teacher. I practiced in our dining room with teddy bears and a set of encyclopedias. How far I have come! I am deeply humbled and delightedly awed to be recognized in this manner.
