To receive the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching is an incredible honor. It is wonderful for dedicated and talented teachers to be recognized for their commitment to their students and their craft of teaching. It provides an exciting opportunity and privilege for teachers to connect with other teachers who feel passionate about helping their students grow in their mathematics understanding. It is truly one of the highest awards an educator can earn.
Leslie Marshall has been an educator for 21 years and has spent the last 13 years teaching third grade at Bluff Park Elementary School in Hoover City Schools. She has also taught at Gwin Elementary School, Berry Middle School, and Shades Mountain Elementary School in Hoover City Schools and at Abrams Elementary School in Bessemer City Schools.
Leslie attended courses offered by the Greater Birmingham Mathematics Partnership. This led to her becoming a member of the Hoover City School’s Math Support Team. As a result, Leslie and a co-teacher began a professional learning community to improve mathematics instruction at her school, funded by Birmingham Southern College.
Leslie serves as her school’s third through fifth grade Math Facilitator. She provides training for teachers, coleads Family Math Nights at her school, and serves as a liaison between teachers and her district on mathematics initiatives, curriculum, and assessment data.
Leslie has a B.S. in elementary education from Samford University and an M.A. in early childhood and elementary education, as well as certification in educational leadership, from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She is certified to teach kindergarten through sixth grade. She is a National Board Certified Middle Childhood Generalist.
