The Presidential Award is an acknowledgment of the dedication and passion I have for middle school mathematics. Nurturing my students’ profound understanding of mathematics has been my only goal, but this dogged devotion to mathematical meaning can be a lonely endeavor. The Presidential Award tells me that I am part of a community of educators who understand this mandate.

Kim Morrow Leong has taught mathematics for 11 years. After teaching fifth to eighth graders for 6 years at All Saints Catholic School in Manassas, VA, she then taught seventh grade mathematics for 3 years at Marsteller Middle School in Prince William County. She just completed her first year as a Middle School Mathematics Trainer. As a trainer, Kim mentors teachers and designs staff development in Loudoun County, VA.

Creative and meaning-rich lessons have driven Kim's professional career. She has also been involved in numerous professional seminars. She participated in the first Illuminations Summer Institute at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and taught the middle school algebra e-workshop that fall. She will serve as a Master Teacher for the University of Virginia’s Building Bridges for Arithmetic to Algebraic Thinking grant for the 2010 - 2011 school year.

Kim has a B.A. in French from the University of California and an M.A. in Linguistics from San Jose State University. In 2010, she completed an M.A in Mathematics Education Leadership and will continue in the doctoral program at George Mason University. Currently, she is endorsed in Virginia as a mathematics specialist as well as in K-12 mathematics, French, English as a second language, and elementary education.
