Kim Melancon has been teaching mathematics at St. Amant High School in St. Amant, LA, for six years. Since 2006 she has also served as a teaching consultant and curriculum writer for the Louisiana Department of Education. She previously taught in Donaldsonville and Baton Rouge, LA.
Ms. Melancon’s ability to communicate and organize the course material sets a standard of excellence for others. She always focuses on how teachers can best help every student achieve high academic standards. She introduces innovations into the classroom, works with other teachers to implement the school improvement plan, engages students in learning, and most importantly pays close attention to each student’s individual needs.
Ms. Melancon has been a member of the curriculum writing team for the parish for many years and recently helped write the State curriculum for algebra I.
Ms. Melancon’s professional development activities reflect her commitment to excellence in teaching. She tirelessly pursued National Board Certification, gaining recognition district-wide and earning a reputation as the best of the best. The topics of workshops and trainings in which she has participated range from content literacy strategies to differentiated instruction to mentor training.
Ms. Melancon stands out for her capacity to increase student academic achievement and influence the professional development of her fellow teachers. She was voted St. Amant High School Teacher of the Year and Ascension Parish High School Teacher of the Year by her peers.
Ms. Melancon has a B.S. in mathematics education (cum laude) from the University of Central Florida. She is currently pursuing a Master in Educational Leadership, with an anticipated graduation date of December 2008.
