My goal for 28 years has been to be an effective and challenging teacher. I have learned that this can best be accomplished by developing a relationship with each of my students. Celebrating success while supporting doubt can teach them resiliency. Inspiring students to know that they can achieve anything with hard work has been my mission. Having been nominated for this award by a colleague has been a validation of my life's work. Receiving this award would be an inspiring honor.

Kathy Burgin has taught in the Harrison Township and Washington Township school districts in New Jersey for more than 28 years. She has specialized in mathematics instruction for the last 10 years.

Kathy is currently working as a mathematics teacher, coach, and consultant for Logan Township School District. She shares her passion for teaching mathematics by working with teachers, guiding them in the implementation of research-based best practices. These include modeling effective mathematics workshops focused on small group instruction and strengthening Response to Intervention strategies. Working with administrators, she is helping to align district mathematics resources with the Common Core Standards.

Taking a leadership role, Kathy has developed and provided professional development opportunities for teachers in many southern New Jersey districts. She has been educating parents for years by providing evening workshops that help them understand how to best help their children at home.

Kathy has participated in the New Jersey State Systemic Initiative and the McSiip Mathematics Leaders Forum of southern New Jersey at Rowan University.

Kathy has a B.A. in elementary education from Glassboro State College, now Rowan University. She is certified in kindergarten through eighth grade elementary education.
