I am honored and thrilled to receive the Presidential Award. I truly love teaching and learning! This award rejuvenates me and inspires me to continue to share my enthusiasm for mathematics with students. I am eager to connect with my colleagues from across the country and share ideas in the crucial challenge to improve math education for a technological society. My professional journey has been blessed with many exemplary educators and wonderful students. Thank you all for your support.
An educator for 20 years, Karen Hyers teaches Advanced Placement Calculus and Accelerated Geometry/Algebra 2 at Tartan High School, where she has worked since 1997. She has also taught for Minneapolis Public Schools and the University of Minnesota Talented Youth Math Program.
Karen shares her love of mathematics with students in the classroom and on the Math Team. She uses innovative ideas, including projects, modeling, and interactive technology. She works to ensure that everyone has the skills needed for success in their chosen career.
As a District Curriculum Coordinator, Karen led her peers in creating tests aligned with State standards and then analyzing results to modify instruction and develop remediation. She also mentors new and student teachers, and she shares ideas as a workshop leader at the local, state, and national levels.
Karen serves on review panels with the Minnesota Department of Education for Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments in Math and with the Minnesota Board of Teaching for teacher licensing standards. She also scores calculus exams for the College Board.
Karen has a B.A. in Mathematics from the College of Wooster in Ohio and both an M.S. in Mathematics and an M.Ed. in Mathematics Education from the University of Minnesota. She is certified in secondary mathematics education.
