I find inspiration in the words of artist and poet Kahlil Gibran: “Work is love made visible.” I love teaching mathematics and cannot imagine a more rewarding or challenging career. Being recognized for doing something I love is an honor beyond measure. This award is not my own, though. It reflects the persistence and dedication of my students, the support of my administrators and colleagues, and the loving guidance of my family. Without them, I would not be accepting this honor.
Jonathan Sheahen has taught mathematics at Harding Academy for the past 7 years. He spent the previous 6 years as an elementary school teacher.
As Harding Academy’s Math Team Leader, Jonathan works with classroom teachers to improve instruction by modeling best practices, serving as an academic coach, and overseeing the mathematics program. In addition, he teaches four classes daily to third through fifth graders.
Jonathan is passionate about showing students that mathematics is understandable and relevant. Through the use of rich, real-life problems, he connects mathematics to the surrounding world. His students are often engaged in projects such as designing the school garden or planning a Thanksgiving dinner. He points to the beauty and joy of mathematics and suggests ways that classrooms can become lively centers of mathematical thinking.
Jonathan has presented at local and regional conferences, where he led sessions on problem solving and mind games. He has also led staff development seminars in differentiation, assessment, and 21st-century teaching.
Jonathan has a B.S. in elementary education from Western Kentucky University and an M.Ed. in educational leadership from Trevecca Nazarene University. He is a certified elementary school teacher and administrator.
