Winning the Presidential Award is the greatest honor of my teaching career. Teaching is not a job; it is my calling and mission in life. I am proud to be a public school teacher. This award validates all the years I have invested in my own education, and all the time and energy I invest in my students’ lives. This will inspire me to continue to be a lifelong learner with a commitment to finding ways to make mathematics engaging, accessible, and meaningful for the students I work with each day.
Gail Romig has been an educator for more than 10 years in the State College Area School District. She taught sixth grade for 1 year at Mount Nittany Middle School and has taught third and fourth grade at Park Forest Elementary School for the past 9 years.
Gail’s passion and dedication to the field of education go far beyond her classroom. Serving on committees to enhance the district’s mathematics curriculum, she is committed to finding ways to make learning meaningful and engaging for all students. She has been a planner and facilitator for districtwide and schoolwide Parent Math Nights and in-service opportunities. She strives to help children, teachers, and parents develop an understanding of and love for mathematics.
As a member of Pennsylvania State University’s Professional Development School, Gail has served as an intern, a mentor, and a Mathematics Professional Development Associate. Her work with future educators deepens their understanding of mathematics and teaches them how to implement an inquiry approach to teaching children. In 2001, Gail won the Outstanding New Educator Award given by Penn State's College of Education Alumni Society Board of Directors.
Gail has a B.S. in elementary education from Penn State University. She is certified in kindergarten through sixth grade.
