Teaching high school mathematics has been extremely rewarding. As a recipient of the Presidential Award, I am honored and humbled to be recognized for doing what I love most: preparing math students for the future. The students in my classroom are the real winners here, as they are the driving force behind what I do every day. I accept this award with the challenge to continue to make my classroom award worthy each and every day.

Fred Strand has taught mathematics at Hatton Public School for the past 30 years. He has coached at least one sport each of those years and has also taught science and physical education.

Fred served on the original North Dakota State Math Standards writing team. This experience encouraged him to accept a position on the North Dakota Council of Teachers of Mathematics board as a middle school teacher representative, where he served two 3-year terms. He was elected president and served 3 years in a leadership role. During his term as president, he was program chair for the 2008 Spring Math Conference and the 2008 North Dakota Education Association Fall Conference mathematics sectionals.

Fred has presented sessions at many state spring and fall mathematics conferences. He also presented at a regional national conference and a national conference.

Fred was named 2006 North Dakota Teacher of the Year and was honored as Mayville State Distinguished Alumni in October 2006.

Fred has a B.S.Ed. in Mathematics Education from Mayville State University and a Master of Arts Teaching: Mathematics from Minot State University. He is certified in mathematics and physical education and holds a middle school endorsement.
