Erin Mikie Yagi

Waipahu, HI

Erin Mikie Yagi teaches seventh-grade life science and eighth-grade earth and space science at Waipahu Intermediate School in Waipahu, HI. Ms. Yagi has been teaching science for eight years and has served as the science department head of the school since 2005. She is the Grade 7 Student Council Advisor. For the district, she serves in a volunteer capacity as the Science Resource Teacher. In this role she helps support consistency and continuity from elementary through high school science classes. She also volunteers as a liaison to the State Professional Development Office.

Ms. Yagi is known for her positive work ethic and for caring for students. Students believe she makes learning fun and classes lively. They appreciate her willingness to work individually with them outside of class time to help them understand difficult concepts. She also provides support to parents who have difficulty with their children. Teachers view her as a role model who provides them with methods for better presenting science concepts, such as visual aids to facilitate learning.

Ms. Yagi holds a certification in science, grades seven through twelve. She has a B.Ed. in secondary science education from the University of Hawaii-Manoa. She is completing an M.Ed. in educational psychology from the same school.
