Denise Romonoski, a middle school mathematics teacher at Hyde Park Academy of Science and Mathematics in Las Vegas, NV, has been teaching for 21 years. Ms. Romonoski has worked in the Clark County School District for six years as a mathematics teacher. She currently teaches algebra honors and geometry honors.
Ms. Romonoski uses mathematics to teach her students the art of thinking so that students can explain the hows and whys of their mathematical solutions. Ms. Romonoski is described as having that rare spark as a teacher. Visitors to her classroom feel the electricity and sense that something exciting is about to happen.
Ms. Romonoski’s understanding of different learning styles enables her to employ a variety of instructional methods and approaches. She consistently develops and implements exercises and activities that stimulate students’ thinking and create an environment that makes learning enjoyable.
Ms. Romonoski’s tireless efforts in planning and structuring the mathematics department have helped make it the envy of the school district. Colleagues hold her in high regard because of her professional commitment, leading through action and example.
For the past three years, Ms. Romonoski has also served as a trainer for the Regional Professional Development Program of Southern Nevada, exploring such topics as brain research and learning, teacher motivation, and how to respond to students who ask when a concept will ever be used outside the classroom.
Ms. Romonoski is certified to teach secondary mathematics. She has a B.A. in mathematics from the State University of New York at Geneseo and a master’s in mathematics and secondary education from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
