Dave Kukla has been a full-time mathematics teacher at Sabin High School in Tucson, AZ, since 1995. He previously taught mathematics and social studies for three years at New York Prep in New York City. He holds certifications in mathematics, history, German fluency, and art.
Mr. Kukla is known and respected for his enthusiasm, creative ideas, and outstanding rapport with students. Considered an expert in cooperative learning, he conducts annual workshops on this approach for first- and second-year teachers. Former students attribute their success in mathematics and their decision to become teachers to Mr. Kukla’s teaching style. They say that he makes mathematics interesting and accessible. He brings creativity, caring, and patience to the classroom and has multiple ways of explaining mathematics.
Mr. Kukla’s many professional development activities include summer institutes and workshops, service on textbook adoption and standards alignment committees, and participation the Technology Literacy Project. Mr. Kukla has authored articles on teaching ideas, hosted the “Do the Math” television series, and given presentations on graphing techniques and Web design.
Mr. Kukla is credited with bringing new technology into the classroom. He is now Webcasting his lessons, and his example encouraged the entire mathematics department to take a summer course on Web site design.
Mr. Kukla has received grants and awards, including the 2007 Educator of the Year and Raytheon Math Moves U awards. He was asked to share his skills by recording algebra lessons on a DVD distributed to 10 districts to help students and teachers improve math test scores.
Mr. Kukla has a B.A. in history from Oberlin College and an M.A. in social studies education from Columbia University Teachers College.
