Darcy Lynn Hampton is a biology and physical science teacher at Alice Deal Junior High School in Washington, DC. She has served as the science department chairperson for the past eight years. Previous positions have included serving as a curriculum coordinator, a technology coordinator, and an elementary school teacher. Ms. Hampton tutors junior high students, holding sessions in the morning, during lunch, and after school.
She is known as a leader among her fellow teachers and colleagues and will support other teachers who seek her advice and support. She has inspired students to develop projects for and compete in the district’s science fair. Parents believe she serves as a mentor to their children and feel their children were fortunate to have had her as a teacher. She has sought out additional education and teaching opportunities each summer in an effort to enhance her teaching and content skills. She participated in the Johns Hopkins University program that places teachers in research laboratories and has worked to support research at the National Institutes of Health. She participated in a national pilot program in the physical sciences at San Diego State University and implemented one of the research-based programs developed through this training in her classrooms.
Ms. Hampton holds District of Columbia Professional Certification in biology/secondary and in elementary education/grades one through six and middle school from Maryland. She has a B.S. in human development with a minor in natural science from Howard University and a Masters in Education from Towson State University. She is currently pursuing an M.S. from George Washington University through a program in partnership with the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
