Cynthia (Cyndie) Marie Beale teaches introductory biology and AP biology at West Valley High School in Fairbanks, AK. She has held her current position for 14 years. She serves as the National Honor Society school sponsor and the Earth Club school sponsor, and is a mentor and teacher for the Alaska State High School Science Symposium. She has also served as a mentor teacher for student teachers, on the Alaska Science Standards Committee, as an AP biology reader, and as a national biotechnology teacher/leader.
Ms. Beale is described by colleagues, parents, and students as dedicated, professional, dynamic, and engaging. She provides a rigorous and enjoyable learning opportunity for at-risk as well as advanced students. Students see her as welcoming, easy to approach, and excited to have them in her classroom. Former students in college stop by to see her because she was a “favorite” and “influential” teacher in their lives. They perceive her class as the most valuable academic experience they had as well as a lot of fun.
Ms. Beale is sought out by school staff and across the district for her unique teaching ideas. Through her efforts the high school collaborates with the University of Alaska, Fairbanks so that AP biology students can develop their science symposium projects alongside a science professor.
Ms. Beale has been a recipient of the British Petroleum Teacher of Excellence Award. She has also been the recipient of the Outstanding Biology Teacher Award for Alaska.
Ms. Beale holds National Board Certification in biological science. She has a B.S. in biological science from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks and an M.S. in science education from Montana State University. In addition, she has taken postgraduate courses in science and education.
