Claire Rosina Laquerre teaches anatomy and physiology, biotechnology, and college prep biology at Woonsocket High School in Woonsocket, RI. Ms. Laquerre has been a science teacher for approximately 21 years and has held her current position for 20 years. She is responsible for the instruction and evaluation of beginner English as a Second Language (ESL) science, transitional ESL science, and integrated ESL science students. She serves as the advisor for the after-school SMILE (Science & Math Investigative Learning Experiences) program sponsored by the University of Rhode Island. She is also an instructor for the Virtual Learning Academy, an alternative after-school program assisting students who are not successful in a traditional classroom. Additionally, Ms. Laquerre give back to her profession through her teaching of pre-service teachers in the continuing education program at Providence College.
Ms. Laquerre is known for setting high standards for student achievement. Students and parents indicate that this has allowed them to be more successful at the high school and college level.She takes concepts and applies them to real-life experiences. She has reached out to the community to provide students with observational opportunities to see the real-life application of biology, such as open-heart surgery, a human cadaver laboratory, and other experiences. She has worked on the State level as part of the design team for the science component of the Rhode Island Statewide Curriculum.
Ms. Laquerre has been honored as the Rhode Island Biology Teacher of the Year and she was given an Innovative Award from the Woonsocket Education Department.
Ms. Laquerre holds State certificates as a professional teacher in general sciences and biologic sciences and as a content ESL teacher. She has a B.A. in biology and secondary education and an M.A. in teaching-biology from Rhode Island College.
