This award confirms the faith and trust my teachers and mentors had in me long before I ever saw it in myself. It affirms that respect can be earned on the frontiers of what is known when you focus on meeting the immediate needs of your students and faculty and refuse to be satisfied with anything that argues the best answers have already been found. It says that an indefatigable belief in the abilities of others to achieve more than even they may dream is essential and deeply valued.
In his 20-year career at the Westminster Schools, Chris Harrow has taught courses ranging from seventh grade Pre-algebra to Advanced Placement Calculus. He has served in student advisory roles and as a department chair.
Chris has assisted the Math Team, sponsored the Campus Conservation Corps, and coached the Robotics Team. Under his guidance, students brought to campus the school's first solar panels, and his Lego Robotics teams advanced to the state finals twice in their first 2 years.
Insatiably curious, Chris pursues professional development from all sources. He has delivered more than 90 presentations, has recently published a precalculus text with computer algebra systems, and is currently helping some of his students publish their own discoveries from explorations in his classes. He engages everyone, employing multiple representations and solutions and encouraging self-analysis to enhance personal growth and understanding.
Chris has a B.S. in Mathematics and Philosophy from Emory University, an M.S. in Mathematics Education from Syracuse University, and an Ed.M. and Ed.D. from Teachers College, Columbia University. Among his many recognitions are National Board Certification, the Edythe May Sliffe Award, a Klingenstein Fellowship, and four STAR teacher awards in Georgia.
