Catherine Cabral is completing her 28th year as a teacher of high school mathematics in Somerset Public Schools in Somerset, MA.
With her thorough subject knowledge and innovative teaching style, Ms. Cabral has earned the respect of students, colleagues, and parents. She is known for well-planned and carefully executed lessons and for making the most of time and class resources. Ms. Cabral has always emphasized learning, not grading, so that her students learn and excel. She works with students’ different learning styles and has been described as an exceptional motivator and gifted teacher. Students’ scores attest to how well-prepared they are for the State’s comprehensive exam. Ms. Cabral encourages students to challenge themselves. She helps them with self-evaluation and building up their confidence. One of Ms. Cabral’s former students, who once considered himself an average student with below-average self-esteem, attributes his career as a mathematics teacher to Ms. Cabral’s exceptional efforts.
Ms. Cabral has participated in numerous professional development activities, ranging from curriculum development to technology integration. Other topics she has pursued include suicide prevention, bullying prevention, and strategies for increasing student learning.
Ms. Cabral has a B.A. in mathematics and elementary education from Rhode Island College. A Golden Apple Award recipient, she has been recognized in Who’s Who Among American Teachers.
