Brendan Kevin Murphy

Bangor, ME

Brendan Murphy has been teaching secondary-level mathematics for nine years and currently teaches at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor, ME.

Mr. Murphy has an unparalleled intensity and passion for mathematics education. Considered a master educator, he inspires students and teachers to continually reflect on and improve their work. Colleagues describe him as responsible, compassionate, fair, honest, and respectful, toward teachers, staff, students, and parents alike.

He has dedicated himself to teaching others to teach and in participating substantially in his own professional development. As a consultant for the College Board, Mr. Murphy has facilitated workshops worldwide for more than 600 teachers, and 96 percent have indicated that the techniques and content he shared will change the way they teach. In turn, he credits workshop participants for giving him new teaching ideas.

Mr. Murphy’s teaching skills have earned him much recognition, including the Siemens Award for Advanced Placement. He has been State finalist for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching and for Maine Teacher of the Year.

Embodying the teacher-as-learner, Mr. Murphy is a leader in his school community, the Maine Department of Education programs, and the College Board. He has designed and presented dozens of workshops on AP statistics and AP calculus AB and has recently attended seminars such as AP Statistics and Mathematics Cross-Tier Teaching Team. He has run a mentoring program for new(er) AP statistics for the last four years for the Maine Department of Education.

Certified as a College Board Endorsed Consultant for four disciplines, he is a College Board National Trainer and co-chair of its Fellow Committee. He also serves on the board of directors for the Association of Teachers of Mathematics of Maine. He has a B.S. in civil engineering from Tufts University and an M.B.A. from Bentley College.
