The recognition of the Presidential Award is a tremendous honor and an affirmation of the work I have done to instill a love of mathematics in my students. This recognition will inspire me to continue to strive for excellence in the classroom. It will also aid me in promoting the importance of mathematics by providing me with opportunities to share my knowledge, skills, and experience with other teachers and create a community of lifelong learners and dedicated educators.
Beverlee-Ann Powell has been a classroom teacher for more than 20 years. During that time, she has taught both special and general education students in first through third grades at Oakland Beach Elementary School in the Warwick Public School District.
Beverlee-Ann’s involvement with mathematics goes beyond the elementary classroom. As a District Trainer for Thinking Math, she facilitates professional development workshop sessions in mathematics instruction for teachers in her district. Beverlee-Ann also serves as a member of the District Mathematics Curriculum Writing Team in conjunction with the Dana Center. This team will be responsible for developing a mathematics curriculum aligned with the Common Core Mathematics Standards.
Beverlee-Ann is committed to new teacher quality. She serves as the New Teacher Mentor Coordinator for the Warwick Public Schools. She serves as a cooperating teacher for preservice teachers and is also a member of the adjunct faculty in the education department at Providence College.
Beverlee-Ann has a B.S. from the University of Rhode Island and an M.Ed. from Providence College. She is a certified elementary teacher and a certified special educator for kindergarten through eighth grade. She is a National Board Certified Early Childhood Generalist.
