Anita Schuler has seventeen years of experience teaching mathematics, with the most recent six at Thomas Jefferson Middle School in Pittsburgh, PA. She holds dual certification in secondary mathematics and elementary education. She is currently the Elementary Mathematics Facilitator for the Mount Lebanon School District in Pittsburgh, PA. She is also a member of the Mathematics Acceleration Committee and Induction Council.
Dedicated to a career in teaching that creates and instills a lifelong love of learning mathematics in students, Ms. Schuler encourages her students to be the best people they can be. She is described as an outstanding mathematics teacher who is a role model for her colleagues and a leader in improving mathematics education at the secondary level. Parents praise her for improving their children’s mathematics skills, thereby nurturing their self-confidence.
Ms. Schuler consistently seeks out students who are having difficulty in class to discuss their mathematical misunderstandings and determine whether the pedagogy matches the students’ learning styles. Ms. Schuler has developed literature, history, and science interdisciplinary activities with her colleagues; sponsored Challenge 24 and Calcusolve; and served on the Mathematics Improvement Team.
Ms. Schuler has participated in Bureau of Education and Research seminars and Connected Mathematics Users’ meetings.
Ms. Schuler is a recipient of the Mary A. McDermott Award for Excellence in Elementary Education and the Edyth May Sliffee Award for Distinguished Junior High Mathematics Teaching.
Ms. Schuler has a B.A. in elementary education (magna cum laude) from Saint Mary’s College and an M.Ed. in mathematics education (summa cum laude) from the University of Pittsburgh. She has also completed graduate-level courses at Indiana Wesleyan University, University of Pittsburgh, and Gannon University.
