Allen Hogie has been teaching mathematics at Brandon Valley High School (BVHS) in Brandon, SD, for 19 years. He previously taught for two years at Lyman High School. He currently teaches geometry, trigonometry, and calculus and is a National Board Certified Teacher of Mathematics/Adolescence and Young Adulthood.
Mr. Hogie is chair of the mathematics department, which produces outstanding results. The Stanford 10 mathematics scores for 11th graders placed the school in the 83rd percentile in 2006. Eighty percent of BVHS students taking an enhanced Stanford 10 in 2007 were determined to be advanced or proficient in mathematics, making the school second among the top 16 high schools in enrollment in mathematics.
The professionalism and the passion that Mr. Hogie has for mathematics are a model for other teachers in the department and the school. He demonstrates an interest in his students and a desire for them to be successful in mathematics. He is a valued colleague and shares his knowledge and expertise with other educators, thereby extending his impact on student achievement in mathematics beyond his own classroom.
Mr. Hogie was a member of the Revision of South Dakota Mathematics Content Standards Committee. He is currently a consultant for the Grade Level Assessment Project for the State of South Dakota.
Mr. Hogie’s honors include nominations for Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, BVHS Teacher of the Year, and Tandy Corporation Outstanding Mathematics and Science Teacher, as well as the Outstanding Young Men of America Award.
Mr. Hogie has a B.S. in mathematics education and a Master of Educational Administration from South Dakota State University.
